Most garden jobs depend on the season. This calendar lists the main tasks for a typical South London garden. Exact timing varies with the weather each year, so use it as a guide rather than fixed dates.
Winter: December to February
- Prune apple and pear trees while they are dormant.
- Prune wisteria back to two or three buds in January or February.
- Plant bare-root trees, shrubs and hedging when the ground isn't frozen.
- Keep off the lawn when it is frozen or waterlogged.
- Check tree ties, stakes and fences after storms.
- Clean and sharpen tools, and service the mower.
Spring: March to May
- Start mowing when the grass grows, with the blades set high at first.
- Feed the lawn in spring and repair bare patches with seed or turf.
- Mulch borders while the soil is moist.
- Weed little and often before weeds set seed.
- Cut back dead growth on perennials and ornamental grasses.
- Avoid cutting hedges from March, as birds start nesting. Read when you can cut hedges.
- Protect tender plants from late frosts.
Summer: June to August
- Mow regularly and raise the blades in hot, dry weather.
- Water new plants and pots, ideally early in the morning or in the evening.
- Deadhead flowers to keep them blooming.
- Prune wisteria's long summer shoots in July or August.
- Keep on top of weeds and watch for pests.
- Only lightly trim hedges, and only after checking carefully for nesting birds.
Autumn: September to November
- Scarify and aerate the lawn, then overseed thin areas.
- Give hedges their main cut once nesting season is over.
- Plant spring bulbs, shrubs and trees.
- Clear fallen leaves from lawns, paths and gutters. Leaves left on a lawn block light.
- Make the last mow of the year with the blades set high.
- Lift or protect tender plants and raise pots onto feet for drainage.
All year round
- Keep paths and patios clear of moss and leaves so they aren't slippery.
- Check fences, gates and sheds after high winds.
- Keep an eye on drainage after heavy rain.
